Accountant CV: qualifications first, then impact

For accounting roles, your qualification status is often the first filter. After that, recruiters look for the size and complexity of what you handled and the improvements you made.

What recruiters look for

  • Qualification and status — ACA, ACCA, CIMA, CPA: qualified, part-qualified (with exams passed) or studying
  • The scale of what you handled: entities, turnover, reporting deadlines
  • Systems: ERP, consolidation and reporting tools
  • Improvements: faster close, better controls, cleaner audits

Turning duties into evidence

Patterns, not examples to copy — fill the [brackets] with your own facts, and leave out anything you cannot back up in an interview.

Terms to use — where they are true of you

Tracking systems and recruiters scan for the job ad’s own words. Use the exact phrasing from the ad you are applying to; these are common for accountant roles.

Common mistakes

  • Not stating exactly how many exams you have passed if part-qualified
  • Describing duties without the scale that shows seniority
  • Omitting the accounting standards you have worked with

For Irish applications

  • Chartered Accountants Ireland (ACA) and ACCA are both widely recognised — give the full name once.
  • Irish roles often reference Revenue and CRO filings; mention them if you have handled them.
