What recruiters look for

  • The languages, frameworks and cloud platforms in the job ad — in a skills section and in context
  • What you built or owned, not just what the team did
  • Signals of quality: testing, code review, reliability, performance
  • Links: GitHub, portfolio or published work, if they show your best code

Turning duties into evidence

Patterns, not examples to copy — fill the [brackets] with your own facts, and leave out anything you cannot back up in an interview.

Terms to use — where they are true of you

Tracking systems and recruiters scan for the job ad’s own words. Use the exact phrasing from the ad you are applying to; these are common for software developer roles.

Common mistakes

  • A skills cloud of every technology ever touched — list what you could be interviewed on
  • Describing the product instead of your contribution to it
  • Two-column templates, which parse badly in tracking systems

For Irish applications

  • If you need an employment permit, say so plainly — or state that you do not (for example Stamp 4, EU citizen).
  • Many Irish tech employers accept a longer CV for senior roles, but two pages is still the norm.
